GENERAL INFORMATION
Name Matrim Cauthon Nickame Mat, Matty Gender Male Species Human Age 20-22 Hair color Brown Eye color Brown Height 5'11" Language Fantasy British English, Old Tongue

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Appearance

Wiry build, scruff, a spray of freckles across his face and down his shoulders and arms. With every new actor, his corkscrew curls grow in power. Maximum amount of dimples allotted to the human face. An animated pretzel-limbed person talking with his hands and curling up in contortionist configurations in seated positions. Contrary to popular belief, he grew up doing farm work (he's but one mortal man, he can't ditch all of it) and is physically fit and muscular. The Aiel remark after the dagger’s wasting sickness he has returned to full health and put on "good muscle." People immediately pick him out as the trickster of the group by his features, with eyes full of mischief and a cheeky smile at the ready.

Demeanor

Puts on a strong front of a flippant, "easy come, easy go" wisecracker. In his own words, he plays up being a fool because no one overestimates the joker without a serious bone in his body and few get a clear read. But those who pay close enough attention can tell his full-time job is flouting what he says by his actions, with his future wife contending he has enough layers to make onions look like apples. A passionate and fun-loving, obstinate and contradictory cat crossed with a fox crossed with a cowboy doing jazz hands that compartmentalizes like an Olympian.

Dress

For God's sake, someone get this man a change of clothes, he's out here perpetually looking like the thermostat is set too low and he's in need of a slightly thicker sweater. His fashion is basic, nothing special or fancy—he defaults to practical, plain, but well-made country chic. He's been unable to afford much in the past, so what he personally owns shows signs of wear and mending.

Voice

I | II

Speaks with a regional Two Rivers "backwater" accent. Unapologetically informal and with a lot a little cursing.

It's noted Mat's Old Tongue can fluctuate between time periods, and between the articulation of a high lord to the affect of a common dockworker. This is due to the influence of his many past life memories competing for real estate.
IN BRIEF

Egwene and Nynaeve, Rand and Mat and Perrin. All five from Emond’s Field in the Two Rivers. Few people had come into the Two Rivers from outside, except for occasional peddlers, and merchants once a year to buy wool and tabac. Almost no one had ever left. Until the Wheel chose out its ta'veren, and five simple country folk could stay where they were no longer. Could be what they had been no longer.
On a distant version of Earth, governed by a Wheel that weaves the pattern of the world, some can tap into a form of magic called the One Power. In a previous age, the most powerful of these channelers rose as the world's only defense against a primordial evil threatening the fabric of reality. Known by his title, the Dragon became infamous for causing a cataclysmic apocalypse and condemning any man to insanity should he be born with power, leaving female-led orders of channelers to rebuild.

Thousands of years later, the Dark One has returned. Prophecy tells so has this powerful channeler's reincarnated soul and both sides of the conflict seek the identity of the Dragon Reborn. In a spit of a farming village, they find five likely candidates.

Each showing unusual potential and abilities thought lost to time, they realize all are ta'veren—literally "pattern-changers," people touched by destiny to influence events and act as vehicles for great change in a world veering off course.

ABOUT

"You have seen pikes pushed before, and faced a charge or two, I vow. Talmanes gives praises when there are two moons, yet I heard him say aloud he would follow wherever you led. Some day I would like to hear your story, Andorman. But you are young—under the Light, I mean no disrespect—and young men have hot blood."

"This rain will keep it cool if nothing else does." Blood and ashes! Were they all mad? Talmanes was praising him? He wondered what they would say if they found out he was only a gambler following bits of memory from men dead a thousand years and more. They would be drawing lots for first chance to spit him like a pig. The lords especially; no one liked being made to look a fool, but nobles seemed to like it least of all, perhaps because they so often managed it on their own. Well, one way or another, he meant to be miles away when that discovery came.
◐ Born to an impoverished family within the small, isolated farming village Emond's Field in the Two Rivers. Eldest child to a drunk, embittered mother taking her frustrations out on a son who embodies a reminder of his flighty, adulterous father. He's been told he's his father's lookalike inside and out a complex-inducing amount.

◐ Has two baby sisters he loves more than life and tries to #singledad in lieu of a stable family, doing regrettably unscrupulous things for money for them.

◐ Known as the mischief-making ne'er-do-well of the community. Smart, resourceful, tricky, and capable of being a resilient do-gooder and honourable rogue, but he would rather loudly complain he's not so you don't go getting ideas. What do you take him for, some kind of good person doing hero things?

◐ It's speculated Mat's bloodline—and in a world of reincarnation, possibly his soul—may descend from the ancient kings and heroes of Manetheren. A lost kingdom wiped out by the Dark One in the place that would eventually become the Two Rivers, the current day residents have retained strong ties to the "old blood" thanks to their geographical isolation and are often hailed by the outside world for their Manetheren blood, though the residents themselves have little understanding of their own origins. This presents oddly for Mat in particular, sometimes experiencing visceral flashes of memory pertaining to that time, including unconsciously slipping into fluent Old Tongue, the language spoken then, and remembering commanding Manetheren's final battle when its last king fell.

◐ L o v e s to gamble. Don't listen to him about keeping his nose out of dangerous causes—that includes taking big risks.

◐ In the fallen city Shadar Logoth, he picked up a dagger tainted by a living darkness, creating a parasitic bond that slowly corrupted him as it fed on his life force. Moiraine observes dark aspects to his character that make him susceptible to such corruption. However, Two Rivers people are also known for being stubborn enough to "give mules lessons and teach stones," and Mat proves he leans all the way into this trait, attributing his surviving the dagger far longer than the average person could to his will and ta'veren nature, which kept him alive long enough to have the dagger's connection severed. After his healing, he has greater resistance to darkness, but the experience marks his personality in the form of more suspicion and wariness than before.

◐ The most in denial about his importance in the coming conflict and the last to exhibit his ta'veren power, which largely manifests as unnaturally good luck. Warping probability around him, almost anything open to chance tends to work out in his favor, from get-rich-quick dicing games, to fending off assassins under "falling piano misses man by inch" circumstances, to being in just the right time and place to overhear the start of a political coup. Basically a human rabbit's foot that monkey paws the shit out of the villain squad.

◐ With time comes understanding the Dragon Reborn is only one part in a web of variables ensuring the Dark One's defeat, the other ta'veren forming its tentpoles. All must be alive and fulfilling their role synchronously by the time of the final battle; should one thread be cut or turn to the Shadow, the web collapses. Knowing this, each are fiercely targeted by the Dark One's agents.

◐ Mat's ultimate role becomes clearer after managing to unlock thousands of years' worth of collective memories from his past lives, lending him the battle experience and skill to be a pain in the ass for the Forsaken—the channelers who went over to the Shadow and became the Dark One's generals in exchange for immortality in the age past. If such a leader existed hiding among mortal men, he'd probably be easy to pick out of a crowd, wouldn't he? A masterful and majestic battlefield commander, a patriarch of ancient untold wisdom—you'd know it if you bumped into a guy like that at the tavern. So noble and venerable and put together and probably cool as hell, that guy would totally wow your socks off with his immaculate vibes. (Humanity try not to nervous laugh challenge.)
